How FFL Transfer Works

Everything you need to know about the FFL pickup process. Read the guide and explore related products at Apollo Wholesale Club.

What is an FFL transfer?

An FFL (Federal Firearms License) transfer is the process by which a federally licensed dealer receives a firearm shipped from another dealer or individual and transfers ownership to you. Federal law requires all retail firearm sales to go through an FFL — there are no exceptions for online purchases.

Why does it work this way?

The Gun Control Act of 1968 requires that all interstate firearms transfers go through licensed dealers who can conduct background checks via the NICS (National Instant Criminal Background Check System). This system has prevented over 1.5 million prohibited persons from purchasing firearms since 1998.

What to bring to the FFL

Bring a valid, government-issued photo ID (driver's license, state ID, or passport). Some states require additional documentation such as a Firearm Owner's Identification (FOID) card or a concealed carry permit. Check your state's requirements beforehand.

What does the FFL transfer fee cover?

The FFL dealer charges a transfer fee (usually $25–$75) for their time, paperwork, and liability. This is separate from Apollo's shipping charge. You pay this fee directly to the receiving dealer at pickup. Apollo has no control over what dealers charge.

How long does it take?

Most background checks are approved instantly or within minutes. Occasionally the FBI requests additional time (a 'delay'), usually resolved within 3 business days. In rare cases, background checks take up to 10 days. If the FBI hasn't responded after 3 business days, the dealer may proceed with the transfer at their discretion.

Ages 18 and older. Applicable product, shipping, and transfer restrictions apply.
